Q & A with Emil...

What prompted you to return to school to achieve your MBA?

After gaining a few years of work experience, I realized that my my career was progressing more slowly than I planned. In order to reach my personal goals and remain competitive in the job market, I knew I had to return to school.

What was the most important factor for you in choosing an MBA/MSA program (or factors you considered)?

Knowing I was interested in attending school full-time, cost was a major driver in my decision. At the same time, I wasn’t willing to sacrifice the quality of my education. I conducted my search with the notion that my academic experience would be highly correlated to the time and effort I'd dedicate to my studies, regardless of where I decided to study.

Why did you choose UIC Liautaud for your MBA/MSA?

After sitting in on classes and attending open houses at most of the business schools in Chicago, I was faced with making a difficult decision. I remember attending an information session at UIC where Professor Shanley led an engaging discussion on corporate strategy. Of all the experiences I had visiting schools up to this point, this was the sole instance that combined theory and practice. Overall, I was attracted to the phenomenal value UIC Liautaud had to offer. Having previously attended UIC as an undergrad I was very familiar with quality of the faculty.

We all know that people pursue the MBA to increase their business knowledge, but since you have started the program, what has been the most unexpected gain the MBA has given you?

The integration with the Liautaud Corporate MBA program creates a very dynamic and diverse classroom experience. I have been able to meet some great people and build friendships with individuals from across the world.

Which class/professor has been your favorite thus far and why?

Dr. Kirschenheiter’s Corporate Valuation course (ACTG 585) Before sitting for the class I had read a handful of books on the topics of business valuation and value investing. Professor Kirschenheiter is enthusiastic and his approach to teaching the material is new and unique. He challenges students to think critically. Rather than follow stanardized financial models in his examples, he encourages students to think outside of the box and use their intuition to solve problems.

What is your favorite aspect of the UIC campus and why?

The newly renovated Douglas Hall, equipped with a market training lab and the latest technology serves as an example of the how UIC Liautaud simulates a real-life work environment . Additionally, the campus is centrally located just minutes away from the loop and Chicago's financial district.

How would you define the Liautaud student?

The Liautaud student body is diverse, both ethnically and in their experiences as well as hardworking and dedicated.

What advice would you provide to incoming UIC Liautaud MBA/MSA students?

Get involved and leave your mark. One of the greatest aspects of the programs offered at Liautaud is that the faculty and staff provide students the autonomy necessary to achieve their goals. Whether this includes designing your own curriculum or conducting an independent study, students have access to invaluable resources. Getting involved with one of the student organzations is also a great way to meet new people, build relationships and expand your network.

Q & A with Josh...

  • Why did you return to school to obtain your Graduate Business Degree?
In order to take the next step in my career and become a leader in my work organization, I needed to get an MBA degree to round out my education and experiences.

  • Why did you choose UIC Liautaud?
The reason I chose UIC Liautaud for my MBA was value. The quality of education that I would receive for the financial commitment I was about to make was exceptional. Furthermore, I wanted to learn from professors who were on the forefront of thought development and innovation in Chicago. I was convinced that UIC Liautaud would expose me to real world applications of fundamental economic theory and new developments in academics and business. Programs like Technology Ventures and IPD were important in helping me to make the final decision about where to attend business school.

  • What has been the most unexpected gain resulting from your Liautaud degree?
I did not expect to learn as much as I did about product development and innovation as I did in the IPD program. Furthermore, post graduation during the interview process, most prospective employers wanted to talk about what I learned in the IPD coursework and how those experiences prepared me to manage the product development life cycle from ideation all the way to final product delivery.

  • How has your Liautaud experience influenced your career to date?
My Liautaud experience has had a profound impact on my career. Because of my education and experiences at Liautaud I was able to secure a leadership development role in one of the largest energy conglomerates in the country. Without my education I would not have been in a position to secure what I consider to be a dream job.

  • Which course or professor was your favorite and why?
My favorite professor was Professor Kirschenheiter who was my instructor for corporate valuation. That class for me was capstone for many of the concepts that I learned in various accounting and finance classes. I learned how to use financial statement information to perform a fundamental valuation on a firm and to investigate in detail how organizations use their assets to generate wealth and codify that process so it can be useful in my own work situations.

  • What was your favorite aspect of the UIC Liautaud program?
While in the program I developed strong and rich relationships. These relationships will be a part of me as I move forward in my professional career.

  • How would you define the Liautaud student?
Liautaud students are very diverse, motivated and accomplished in their careers before they enter the program. The person next to you in a classroom is a high achiever that has had many successes in their career and someone from whom you have the opportunity to learn.

  • Now that you've graduated, what advice do you have for current and/or prospective Liautaud Students?
The Liautaud MBA program will provide you with the tools and development necessary to be successful. However, it is up to the individual student to make the process as enriching and fulfilling as possible. Step outside of your comfort zone and challenge yourself to learn something new and make the most of your opportunities while you are in the program. Finally, stay connected to the program after graduation and provide guidance to those students who will join our alumni network in the future.

Jia Luo
MSA Candidate 2012

  • Industry/ Field of work: Food service, restaurant management
  • Undergraduate degree in: Computer Science
  • Undergraduate School: Beijing Normal University
  • Career Goal: Auditor
  • Organizations involved with:Beta Gamma Sigma, UIC Accounting Club
  • Linkedin Profile: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/jia-luo/19/354/909

Q & A with Jia....

  • What prompted you to return to school to achieve your Master of Science in Accounting (MSA)?
    Career change
  • What was the most important factor for you in choosing an MSA program (or factors you considered)?
My career interest, my previous education stage, the program design
  • Why did you choose UIC Liautaud for your MSA?
The background coursework, the location of UIC
  • We all know that people pursue a graduate business degree to increase their business knowledge, but since you have started the program, what has been the most unexpected gain the MSA has given you?
To my surprise, besides what the program coursework offers, I also obtained lifetime knowledge and skills outside of Accounting in public speaking, communication, teamwork and time-management. Other experiences such as networking, being a student ambassador and a teaching assistant, working with professors and staff, initiating activities have also been far beyond what I expected to get from UIC before I started the MSA program.
  • The UIC Liautaud professors are continuously involved in researching new business trends and innovations. How have you felt the professors have been able to integrate their theoretical knowledge into practical applications? Do you have any examples?
    • Managerial Accounting (ACTG506): Professor Peter Chalos integrated his working experiences and research into his teaching.
    • Corporate Valuation and Accounting Information (ACTG 585): Professor Michael Kirschenheiter integrated his research in how to measure companies’ abnormal earnings into this class.
    • Accounting Research (ACTG593): Professor Ram Ramakrishnan integrated his research in accounting into this class.
    • Negotiations (MGMT564): Professor Shelley Brickson integrated her research in what role commitment plays in negotiations into this class
  • Which class/professor has been your favorite thus far and why?
Professor Peter Chalos has been my favorite professor thus far because he was not only very clear in his teaching, but he didn’t overwhelm us with too much information. He led us to do projects, designed perfectly fit to the teaching, to learn and internalize knowledge and skills quickly. He pointed out crucial weaknesses in our solutions of projects, asked us questions rather than dictating a solution, wrote encouraging comments on our homework, all motivating us to study proactively. When I was taking the class, although I felt it was easy and enjoyable, I learned a lot. Especially after I started being the teaching assistant for the Managerial Accounting course Managerial, I realized more clearly of how solid my knowledge is with how little “pain” I went through. Professor Peter Chalos also related his working experiences with our study very often, which was very entertaining.
  • What is your favorite aspect of the UIC campus and why?
Professor’s and staff’s openness to students and the attitude of being always willing and ready to help with whichever issue students would have.
  • How would you define the Liautaud student?
Liautaud students are hardworking, committed to study, friendly and sweet.
  • What advice would you provide to incoming UIC Liautaud MSA students?
I felt it has been extremely helpful to speak with the professors as much as possible.  Always keep in mind that professors are here to help, and they appreciate when you study hard and appreciate the work they have put into their courses.  I'd say always smile and try to help whoever  comes to you. It pays back. Also, rather than focusing primarily on your GPA, focus on internalizing the knowledge and valuable information that you gain from your professors.

  • Industry/ Field of work: Marketing
  • Undergraduate degree in: BFA Interior Architecture
  • Undergraduate School: Columbia College Chicago
  • Career Goal: to be a business owner, of what I’m not sure yet. The sky is the limit!
  • Organizations involved with: Net Impact, GMARK
  • Linkedin Profile: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jmohr4

Q & A with Jocelyn...
  • What prompted you to return to school to achieve your MBA?
I have always enjoyed art and design, which is why I pursued a fine arts degree.  Then I went out into the real world and quickly realized that while there is great talent within the art and design industry, there isn’t a whole lot of business experience.  I think the economy has given many, including myself, the push needed to go out and really refine what you would like to do in life.  I hope to one day have a job that allows me to meld my artistic and new found business skills.
  • What was the most important factor, or factors you considered in choosing an MBA program?
I was looking for unique opportunities (such as the tech ventures program,) smaller program size, and a location somewhat close to home for ease of commuting.

  • Why did you choose UIC Liautaud for you MBA?
It really came down to deadlines, timing, and the fact that their entrepreneurship concentration is among the top in the country.  I really feel like I am getting the best bang for my buck here.

  • We all know people pursue an MBA to expand their business knowledge, but since starting the program, what has been the most unexpected gain the MBA has given you?
    Hands down the networking opportunities.

  • Which course has been your favorite so far and why?
Organizational Behavior with Professor Barlow.  Not only does he have great experience and knowledge that continues to keep you engaged in the course, but everyone has had experience with management, good or bad, which makes the content relatable to almost everyone.

  • How would you define the Liautaud student?
Dedicated.  It truly is great to see how much time and effort students put into their course work, all while balancing their obligations outside of the classroom.  It is very inspiring!

  • Aside from classes, what have you enjoyed most about being a Liautaud student?
The organizations have been great.  There have been many opportunities to meet new people and lots of fun events.  It’s great to have occasions where you can step away from the work and let loose with all the great people you have met in class. I have already established some great friendships in the short amount of time I’ve been here.

  • What advice would you provide to incoming UIC Liautaud MBA students?
Network, network, network.  While it can be challenging to juggle work, classes, family life, etc., part of your experience should be embracing the opportunities to expand your network and to grow your list of contacts.  It’s amazing how many opportunities can come your way through networking!

  • Current Employer: Walgreens, Market Manager - Market Planning & Research

Q & A with Marisa...

  • Why did you return to school to obtain your Graduate Business Degree:
I always knew I wanted to pursue a graduate degree, but I was having a hard time deciding between a marketing-specific degree and something broader, an MBA. Ultimately, I realized that getting the business degree would be the better fit. I realized that it would provide me the opportunity to develop new skills and strengthen those that I had, as well as open up new possibilities for me in the future as well.

  • Why did you choose UIC Liautaud:
I chose UIC Liautaud for two main reasons:

    • Since UIC is part of the University of Illinois system I felt that I was "keeping it in the family". After attending undergrad in Champaign, going to UIC sounded like a great opportunity to extend my Illinois education, while being able to stay in the great city of Chicago, where I had been developing my career and professional network (not to mention, a serious love of Chicago food, culture and the summers that we live for around here!).
    • I also had the chance to meet some Liautaud students and alumni prior to applying, and after meeting them, UIC Liautaud felt like the right fit.

  • What has been the most unexpected gain resulting from your Liautaud degree:
I wanted to get a broader business education with the MBA versus a more specialized degree, but I thought I knew exactly what kind of job I would take after graduation. I ended up taking a job that actually pulls a wide range of my UIC Liautaud experience together on a daily basis- research, marketing, economics, finance. Before this degree, I might have followed a more predictable, specific route, but afterwards I was able to step out of my comfort zone. I think that will pay off in the future - and it was definitely a result I had not anticipated.

  • How has your Liautaud experience influenced your career to date?
My Liautaud experience certainly made me more marketable. I feel that I have a lot more options in my career path as a result.

  • Which course or professor was your favorite and why:
Marketing Management, Professor Jelena Spanjol. She really pushed us to think critically, and her class was great preparation for real, post-MBA work. For someone such as myself, who had previously been working in more of a creative/right-brain environment, this class challenged me and helped hone those analytical skills that I wanted to strengthen, in order to combine with that existing work experience I had.

  • What was your favorite aspect of the UIC Liautaud program:
My favorite aspect was the people I worked with in the classroom and outside, in all of the student groups. I really met some great, hardworking individuals who actually care about one another.

  • How would you define the Liautaud student:
The Liautaud student is unique and hard working.

  • Now that you've graduated, what advice do you have for current and/or prospective Liautaud Students:
Don't underestimate the impact you can make while in the program. Its a smaller program so there are some great opportunities to really go for it.

  • Why did you return to school to obtain your Graduate Business Degree?
I returned to school to obtain my business degree to ensure that I opened up every door for advancement in the professional world. An MBA not only allows you to broaden your skill set but allows you to strengthen your overall contribution in the workplace.

  • Why did you choose UIC Liautaud?
I chose UIC because of the intimate class size and the opportunity to study abroad. I felt UIC was a place that would challenge me and at the same time provide me with a solid framework to enter the workforce and be able to contribute immediately.

  • What has been the most unexpected gain resulting from your Liautaud degree?
The most unexpected gain that resulted from my degree was the lasting friendships that I created. The network of people I was able to establish in a short amount of time speaks loudly to the quality of the school as well as the genuiness of the students.

  • How has your Liautaud experience influenced your career to date?
When I first entered the MBA program I was undecided as to which industry I wanted to pursue a marketing career. After participating in the Know Europe Program, I was able to gain invaluable experience in the CPG industry which led to me pursuing a career at Kellogg.

  • Which course or professor was your favorite and why?
While there are several professors that are well deserving of being recognized, Professor Spanjol was my favorite. She taught each class with such passion and really dug deep into all angles to analyze marketing decisions. She was able to take all the knowledge I had gained from all disciplines and apply them to marketing in a strategic way. It was the most challenging course I took but by far the most rewarding.

  • What was your favorite aspect of the UIC Liautaud program?
The intimacy the program presents is my favorite aspect of UIC. Every professor knows you by name which allows you to have the opportunity to individually excel. UIC also provides the ability to tailor your learning to your passion to ensure a high rate of success.

A Jack of all trades. I think the Liautaud student possesses a 360 degree of characteristics. Hardworking, intelligent, passionate, ambitious and social are just a few. We make the most out of every situation and work hard to earn what we are given.

  • Now that you've graduated, what advice do you have for current and/or prospective Liautaud Students?
Take the time to get to know your classmates. UIC attracts alot of hidden talent which hold limitless potential. Build up your network, challenge yourself in every class and make a difference in the time you are there.

Q & A with Dave...

  • What prompted you to return to school to achieve your MBA?
I’ve always had the desire to obtain my MBA, and after working in the professional field for a few years, I felt I would have much more of a societal impact with a Master’s degree. By gaining that competitive advantage, I’ll not only be able to help myself achieve personal goals, but also help those around me achieve theirs.

  • What was the most important factor for you in choosing an MBA program (or factors you considered)?
Past experiences. When looking back on my past careers, I often recall that the most fulfilling and opportunistic times were not the ones with high monetary value, but those that were intrinsically fulfilling. That being said, the most gratifying aspects I found were those times helping and learning small European start-up businesses compete in the marketplace.

  • Why did you choose UIC Liautaud for your MBA?
Besides the many offerings UIC Liautaud has for those seeking a Master's Degree, the one facet that caught my attention was the ability to obtain multiple concentrations. I've always had a passion for international business and finance, and juxtaposing that with the strength of the Entrepreneurship concentration, it was an easy decision.

  • We all know that people pursue the MBA to increase their business knowledge, but since you have started the program, what has been the most unexpected gain the MBA has given you?
The diversity and viewpoints of my fellow classmates. Being a part of the MBA program brings together people from all parts of the world. Knowing that your peers have different backgrounds and experiences brings even more enlightenment to your educational experience.

  • Which class/professor has been your favorite thus far and why?
I’ve really enjoyed my finance courses. Both FIN500 Intro to Finance and FIN510 Investments have really help me gain a greater appreciation for Finance. Professors Randy Adams (Intro) and Ozgur Arslan-Ayaydin (Investments) are having knowledgeable and expect only the best from their students.

  • What is your favorite aspect of the UIC campus and why?
A close tie the students feel with each other. We’re all very hard-working and no one holds themselves in a complacent way.

  • How would you define the Liautaud student?
    Motivated, concentrated, and determined.

  • What advice would you provide to incoming UIC Liautaud MBA students?
Don't let this opportunity pass you by. Take full advantage of all the resources available to you throughout campus and the community. And network as much as you can... those classmates sitting next to you could one day be invaluable business partners!

Q & A with Adrienne...

  • What prompted you to return to school to achieve your MBA?
I realized that I needed business training to be an effective advocate for the arts and promote arts education. I couldn’t do it with a fine arts degree alone.
  • What was the most important factor for you in choosing an MBA program (or factors you considered)?
School rankings, student organizations (and participation from classmates), location, career services
  • Why did you choose UIC Liautaud for your MBA?
I thought it had a strong MBA program with enough flexibility to fit my schedule and was in a fantastic location.
  • We all know that people pursue the MBA to increase their business knowledge, but since you have started the program, what has been the most unexpected gain the MBA has given you?
I believe I am meeting and working with a group of smart, motivated, and talented individuals that I will interact with for the rest of my professional life.
  • The UIC Liautaud MBA professors are continuously involved in researching new business trends and innovations. How have you felt the professors have been able to integrate their theoretical knowledge into practical applications? Do you have any examples?
Dr. Barlow and Professor Adams have both had long and successful careers in their respective fields. Because of this, they are not only able to offer information and insight, but draw on specific examples from their professional life to illustrate their point.
  • Which class/professor has been your favorite thus far and why?
Dr. Jenny Hoobler, my professor for Organizational Behavior. I believe she was an informative and interesting educator, and I believed the class material was extremely relevant. I have already put my knowledge of leadership styles, corporate culture, and conflict resolution into practice.
  • What is your favorite aspect of the UIC campus and why?
The location. Student groups, events, programs, and social gatherings have happened at wonderful locations, taking advantage of everything Chicago has to offer.

Get ready to create your own opportunities. Yes, student organizations and career services offer help and guidance, but you are the one that will make your UIC experience. I would encourage new students to explore the city, the campus, the student groups and take advantage of their opportunities. The self-motivated student can accomplish wonderful things while at UIC.

Q & A with Maggie...
  • What prompted you to return to school to achieve your MBA?
I wanted to change my career path. After working in a highly specialized area for several years, I found that I was limited in my job options, and I wanted to move beyond that.

  • What was the most important factor, or factors you considered in choosing an MBA program?
I looked at location, costs and value, the programs offered, the professors, and the current students.
  • Why did you choose UIC Liautaud for you MBA?
When I attended information sessions for various schools, I found that the Liautaud students were the ones who seemed the most excited about their program. I was looking for the school that would provide the right experience for me during the program, not just a piece of paper when I graduated. I felt that programs such as IPD would give me practical knowledge and experience.

  • We all know people pursue an MBA to expand their business knowledge, but since starting the program, what has been the most unexpected gain the MBA has given you?
I have a master's in library science, and I didn't expect it to work so well with my MBA coursework. That aspect of my educational background, in combination with my work experience, has given me a greater appreciation for data. When I started the program, I didn't realize how important data are to every aspect of business.
  • Which course has been your favorite so far and why?
Interdisciplinary Product Development (MKTG 594) has been my favorite course; it was one of the reasons I chose LGSB, and I wasn’t disappointed with my experience. Having the opportunity to develop product ideas for an actual company was an invaluable experience. I had a great team, and enjoyed having the opportunity to work on a cross-functional team--we had 2 industrial design students, 2 engineering students, and 3 MBA students on my team. I wanted a course that would give me hands-on practical experience, and that’s exactly what IPD provided.
  • How would you define the Liautaud student?
It's hard to define THE Liautaud student, because there is such diversity among the student body. Students come from different educational and work backgrounds, different parts of the world, and they have different career goals. One thing I have noticed is that students want to help each other; I know at many schools the students are very competitive, but here it seems that the students want to help each other succeed.
  • Aside from classes, what have you enjoyed most about being a Liautaud student?
I have really enjoyed getting to know my classmates.

  • What advice would you provide to incoming UIC Liautaud MBA students?
Form study groups with your classmates because it gives you a great opportunity to get to know the people with whom you will be working for the next couple of years.

Q & A with Randy...

  • Why did you return to school to obtain your Graduate Business Degree?
As I began to grow my professional career in my 20's, I realized that I wanted to have more in-depth knowledge of certain business issues that I would not learn in my current line of work. Before consulting, I worked for a bank; and before that I was an equities trader. I have always had a wide range of topics that were intriguing to me, but was also aware of the fact that I couldn't embrace all of these things with my profession. Business school allowed me to engage the passion I had for these other topics I was not able to work with on a professional basis.
  • Why did you choose UIC Liautaud?
UIC Liautaud has an amazing curriculum, great professors, and a strong dedication to the Chicago business community. On top of that, it was an incredible value compared with other accredited MBA programs, and I was also a big fan of the semester class schedules (instead of quarters).

  • What has been the most unexpected gain resulting from your Liautaud degree?
The entreprenuerial spirit that UIC Liautaud stands for is something that has had a profound affect on me. I have never thought of myself in an innovative/entrepreneurial way; but there is a certain part of the Liautaud culture that makes you think about different business situations as if you were running things on your own.

  • Which course or professor was your favorite and why?
Professor Dale Rosenthal - Market Microstructure and Electronic Trading. Not only was this an amazing experience because of my background as an equities trader, but having Dale as my professor for this class was easily one of the highlights of my time at UIC Liautuad. His practical, real-world experience combined with his incredible academic intellect made it the most fun and beneficial class that I have ever had.

  • What was your favorite aspect of the UIC Liautaud program?
Being a part of the MBA Association was something that really enhanced my experience at UIC Liautaud. The opportunities that I had to bond and network with my fellow students were amazing, and some of the events put on by the MBAA were both fun and academically relevant.
  • How would you define the Liautaud student?
    Intelligent, Creative, Practical.
  • Now that you've graduated, what advice do you have for current and/or prospective Liautaud Students?
If you're going to be a part-time student while still working full-time, you need to learn how to budget your time properly. Certain times of the year are going to be busier than others, and in order to make sure you don't burn out there needs to be a plan in place that makes your homework and studying time consistent. It's not undergrad. You can't just wait until the last minute and cram for a test or analyze a case study in a day or two. There needs to be a scheduled consistency to the way you manage your work with your academics. If you don't manage your time properly, stress levels can get pretty high in a very short period of time.

  • Is there anything else that you’d like to share with the Liautaud community?
Yes. GET INVOLVED. Don't just go to class, study and move on. Join a club, volunteer for helping in the UIC Liautaud office, and go to events that the school puts on. Not taking advantage of all that UIC Liautaud has to offer is cheating yourself. There are endless opportunities just waiting for you at UIC Liautaud......but it's up to you to go out and grab them.

  • Linkedin Profile:

    http://www.linkedin.com/pub/zac-bleicher/4/97a/b04

Q & A with Zac...

  • What prompted you to return to school to achieve your MBA?
After seven years in the field, I decided that I was ready to learn more about the details of business management. My academic background was steeped in liberal arts, and I lacked a foundation in economics, accounting, management theories, and other important business-related studies. Essentially I was tired of not being able to fully understand the "business conversation."
  • What was the most important factor for you in choosing an MBA program (or factors you considered)?
To me, location and value were the most important factors. I wanted to stay in Chicago and attend a school where I would network with students who would be most likely to stay within the Chicagoland area after graduation, and I also wanted to get a good, affordable education so that I wouldn't need to "sell my soul" after I was done just to pay off my student loans.
  • Why did you choose UIC Liautaud for your MBA?
It is a center-city campus with access to everything Chicago has to offer. There is a great alumni network of down-to-earth professionals who are candid with current students about their professional stories and can help you chart your own path. The faculty is strong, the price is half of that of the private business schools in the area (in-state tuition), and the student body comes from a variety of backgrounds, both domestic and international, bringing much-needed diversity to a graduate pursuit that often breeds conformity.
  • We all know that people pursue the MBA to increase their business knowledge, but since you have started the program, what has been the most unexpected gain the MBA has given you?
I have learned that business school is absolutely nothing like what I expected, and that there is much value in a business education, especially in today's world. Instead of being stuffy and overly theoretical, I have found it to be quite applicable to everyday life. I have also found the student body, at least at UIC, to be quite worldly.
  • The UIC Liautaud MBA professors are continuously involved in researching new business trends and innovations. How have you felt the professors have been able to integrate their theoretical knowledge into practical applications? Do you have any examples?
A great example of this would be Prof. Shelley Brickson and her class Leading for Impact. In this class Prof. Brickson introduces students to her theory of organizational internal and external relationships, and whether they are individualistic, relational, and/or collectivistic. Using countless examples in readings, cases, and videos, she proves that there are fundamental organizational relationship mechanisms, and that these mechanisms can be harnessed depending on the type of culture one desires in a particular company.

  • Which class/professor has been your favorite thus far and why?
Again, Prof. Brickson, and her Negotiations class, is probably the best class in the program. What at first sounds like a wishy-washy course, where one "learns how to negotiate," turns into an all-out immersion in altering one's thought process when it comes to not just direct negotiating, but indirect negotiations where we don't always assume we are negotiating at all. Prof. Brickson is so engaging that almost the entire class participates each time one meets, and she encourages role playing so that one gets to test out negotiation tactics and see for oneself their efficacy.
  • What is your favorite aspect of the UIC campus and why?
I like that it's centrally located near the heart of Chicago. It is easily accessible by train, bus, bicycle, or car. There is a lot to do around campus, from bars and restaurants, to art centers and performance spaces. It's also fairly compact, making it easy to get around.
  • How would you define the Liautaud student?
    Down-to-earth, friendly, experienced, inquisitive, fun

  • What advice would you provide to incoming UIC Liautaud MBA students?
Research your classes and email professors before you show up on the first day. Have a sense of what you're getting into before you get blindsided. The truth is not every professor can be right for you, and not every course is exactly what was advertised in a one sentence blurb on the upcoming schedule. No one is more responsible for your education than you, so take the bull by the horns and make it the best experience you can with research, planning, and dedication.

Q & A with Dominic...

  • What prompted you to return to school to achieve your MBA?
Seeking higher education, challenge, going abroad, higher career goals, industry shift
  • What was the most important factor for you in choosing an MBA program (or factors you considered)?
Seeking mutual learning experiences with diverse student body, inspiration, entrepreneurial experience
  • Why did you choose UIC Liautaud for your MBA?
    For entrepreneurship program, Chicago
  • We all know that people pursue the MBA to increase their business knowledge, but since you have started the program, what has been the most unexpected gain the MBA has given you?
Exposure to different business backgrounds and people, exposure to entrepreneurship and inspiration through UIC provided resources
  • The UIC Liautaud MBA professors are continuously involved in researching new business trends and innovations. How have you felt the professors have been able to integrate their theoretical knowledge into practical applications? Do you have any examples?
Teaching THEIR views on different business issues and not simply book knowledge from others
  • Which class/professor has been your favorite thus far and why?
Tech Ventures Program, Interdisciplinary Product Development, Entrepreneurial Consulting. What all of those classes have in common is that they are very much hands-on. In both, entrepreneurial consulting and IPD we have worked with and for a client with relatively broad problem statements. In both instances it was our task to figure out what the actual problem is, what the possible solutions could be and which of those solutions could potentially have the biggest impact (= recommendation). IPD is very compelling due to it's interdisciplinary nature. Furthermore, it teaches you a great deal about how product development is actually practiced in the real world - it's fuzzy, not efficient and little hints might potentially offer huge insights. The scope and workload of Tech Ventures is well beyond that of any other class. Personally, it's all encompassing nature and entrepreneurial challenge are what makes this class so much fun and learning intensive. To me, this program is a "must-do" for all those seriously interested in entrepreneurship (unless you are already running your own venture). On top of that, it is probably the class that distinguishes UIC from most other business schools and could thus be a positive game-changer for your resume and future career.
  • What is your favorite aspect of the UIC campus and why?
In Germany, we don't really have a campus culture. There, University buildings can sometimes be scattered throughout the whole city (commuting between classes). Consequently, what I really like about the UIC campus is that almost everything is in one place and very centralized. Besides that, the new Douglas Hall building as well as the Innovation Center offer a study and learning environment that poses the right kind of environment for creativity, entrepreneurial and innovation oriented classes.
  • How would you define the Liautaud student?
The vast majority of Liautaud students I have gotten to know is hard working, well-grounded and self-made. I highly respect those people who have a family at home, a full-time job (or part time job) and take classes on the side. To me, this shows commitment, determination and outstanding work-ethic.
  • What advice would you provide to incoming UIC Liautaud MBA students?
Take advantage of all the resources provided to you! Reach out to as many students/ faculty members as you can and experiment.
